In Case You Were Wondering

John Hagee is a nutty divisive bigot.

Mike Huckabee has directly embraced John Hagee. His disclaimer of Hagee has been unusually mild — he has said “I’m going to let Pastor Hagee speak to that because, you know, I can’t speak for him anymore than he could speak for me. I’m sure that there’re things I’ll say that he disagrees with.”

Richard Cohen has never mentioned Hagee in his column.

[UPDATE: To be fair, Cohen has taken shots at Huckabee for capitalizing on religious intolerance. But there’s a big difference between Huckabee’s direct embrace of Hagee and the degrees-of-separation game Cohen is playing with Obama.]

  1. For Hagee as biased against Catholics and Catholicism, the source quotes William Donahue. I wouldn’t take his opinons too seriously; he behaves as if Catholicism is everywhere under siege.

  2. Agreed. In fact the evidence of Hagee’s anti-Catholic bias is supposed to be stuff he’s said about the role of the Catholic Church in the Holocaust, which is IMO defensible and may be even true. (And of course that’s the only thing that Huckabee’s disowned, as it hurts him with voters he might want to reach.)

But Hagee is definitely bigoted against Muslims, he has crazy millenarian views that are Not Good For The Jews, he blames secular Jews for the Holocaust, and he foresees the nuclear destruction of the coasts of the U.S. as payback for not defending Israel from the coming Russian invasion. Him crazy.
