An Extremely Important Political Question

What is the difference between “bodysurfing” and “swimming”?

Also (this is a real question) how come the ocean is salty and other bodies of water aren’t? OK, there seems to be an answer to that.

  1. Judging from the pictures, the critical thing is whether you do it in Hawaii. But seriously, I think when you bodysurf you let a wave take you, not moving your arms and legs.

  2. Yes, decadent coastal – maybe just west coastal – elites have a nuanced view of the swimming/bodysurfing distinction. Swimming is whatever swimming usually is; bodysurfing is catching a wave and using one’s body sort of like a board to catch a wave. I’ve actually never bodysurfed and haven’t been to the beach for a long time, so I don’t know if swimming while floating on a wave is discouraged.

  3. Pretend I didn’t repeat “catch[ing] a wave” in that comment.
