  1. What criteria do people use for this category? Is it for games that successfully implement something difficult/complicated? Or games that have a lot of polish and “juiciness”?

  2. I’m voting for Grandma Bethlinda’s Variety Box and Singular. Both of these have a minimalist approach to implementation that I think works very well.

Grandma Bethlinda does a ton with two verbs, USE and EXAMINE, and it’s almost always clear what USE will do before you do it, despite the verb being so vague. Lots of puzzles and personality are derived from the mechanic itself.

Singular probably has poor odds at getting a nomination, but I think it’s great. It expresses an entire fantasy RPG through one-word actions. And it doesn’t go the easy route and just hang everything on silly jokes to do this. It’s mysterious, horrific, there are passages with genuine beauty to them, and “leveling up” involves emotional struggle. Every word is a link is an action is an entire chapter in the story. That’s good implementation of hypertext in my book.
