XYZZY Awards Discussion: Best Individual NPC

This post is for discussion of nominations for Best Individual NPC in the 2015 XYZZY Awards. For nominations, you will have to describe which NPC you mean as well as say what game it is from, so in your discussion please make clear which individual NPC you are talking about. If you are posting spoilers for a game, please declare them at the beginning of your post!

  1. Hana from Hana Feels was my favorite NPC. I believe she was the only NPC in the game, while the PC cycles through different people.

  2. Spoilers for Winter Storm Draco and Ether!

If you’ve played Winter Storm Draco, you’ll know that Winter Storm Draco is actually an NPC with dialogue. An NPC with very good dialogue and a menacing personality! But what makes Draco extra special to me is that the game’s environment is actually an extension of Draco. You’re inhabiting Draco when you play, fighting against the storm at every step.

Ether has a similar twist, when you realize the environment is sentient. I give the edge to Draco because Draco has a whole conversation with you, which allows for a more fleshed-out character. It’s interesting how both these games not only turn their environments into NPCs, but both also explore the same theme with the NPCs wanting to have their identities validated.
